Civil Court Rules
It is critical that lawyers practicing in the civil division understand Chapter 9 of the Rules For District Courts. The first seven rules in the chapter address protocol and general guidelines with respect to the daily order of business, the calling of the docket, the form of pleadings and order signing. Of particular importance are Rules 9.8 through 9.10 pertaining to exceptions and motions. Finally the procedure for obtaining trial settings is set forth in Rule 9.14 of the uniform state rules which was patterned after the Caddo District Court rules, which I co-authored in 1993. For a detailed examination of these rules and a summary of effective pretrial practice please see the paper “Effective Pretrial Procedure and Motion Practice in Louisiana District Courts, a presentation to the North Louisiana Defense Lawyers Seminar on January 25, 2008 (related documents, below). Also, for forms of scheduling orders please check last drop-down box under the “Court” tab.
To obtain a civil trial setting, follow Rule 9.14 and direct your request to the attention of Gailyn Dennis. You may contact Ms. Dennis at (318) 429-7661.
