Ethics and Professionalism

It should never be forgotten that lawyers and judges are members of the legal profession. The rules which govern the conduct of lawyers, some of which are mandatory and some aspirational, are critical to the legal profession. I have presented well over a dozen lectures and papers on the subjects of ethics for lawyers and judges as well as professionalism.

In 2003 the Supreme Court of Louisiana appointed me to the 15 member Advisory Committee to the Supreme Court for the revision of Judicial Conduct in which I serve as chairman of a subcommittee.

The Advisory Committee is chaired by Retired Justice Harry Lemmon and has recently been involved in preparing a report to the Supreme Court revision of Canon 3C involving issues of disclosure and recusation. In 2008, a judicial election year, at the request of the Louisiana Supreme Court, the Committee made recommendations to the Supreme Court on campaign conduct. The Supreme Court adjusted those recommendations with slight modifications. A particularly interesting presentation was one in 1997 titled Judges, What You Should Expect From Us.
