The Nathaniel Code Case

During the 1980s Nathaniel Code terrorized the Cedar Grove area of Shreveport systematically and methodically torturing and killing men, women and children. He was finally caught and arrested by Shreveport Police in 1987. I was then a part time assistant district attorney working for Caddo District Attorney Paul Carmouche. Noting my previous experience prosecuting homicide cases, Mr. Carmouche assigned the case to me. The case took months to prepare and 23 consecutive days in trial with over a hundred witnesses and several hundred items of physical evidence. A jury found Code guilty as charged of the homicides and sent him to Angola’s death row. Code is no doubt one of the worst serial killers in this country and the worst criminal in the history of Caddo Parish. You can listen to my opening statement made to the jury September 24, 1990 in which I outline the grisly details of the horrific signature-type murders perpetrated by this vicious killer during his rampage in the 1980s, and you can also listen to the September 29, 1990 direct examination of then Coroner George McCormick in which he describes in grim detail the quadruple 1985 murders of the Cheney family members.
