Instructor

Since 1991, I have served as an instructor for the Louisiana Judicial College, Shreveport Bar Association and other legal associations, presenting over 50 lectures. In addition, I have served as an instructor for the Shreveport Police Academy, Caddo Sheriff’s Training Academy and as an adjunct instructor of Business Law at LSUS. For detailed listing see ‘Presentations, Papers and Publications 1991-2008

  1. Louisiana Judicial College – After my first several years on the bench, I became a frequent speaker for the Louisiana Judicial College (the first time I invited myself; after that I have been invited by the College!). For the 2008-09 term John Conery, President of the Louisiana District Judges Association has appointed me chairman of the Judicial Education Committee. I have lectured fellow state district judges on such topics as Professionalism, Capital Litigation, Evidence and Procedure. For a complete listing please see presentations link.
  2. Shreveport Bar Association – In the year 2000, I was a founding member of what was to become an annual continuing legal education seminar in which local judges serve as instructors teaching local lawyers recent developments in all areas of law – both statutory and jurisprudential. Each year the annual program has grossed well over $50,000.00, which the association can use locally for programs that benefit our community and local charitable contributions. I have usually taught courses in recent developments in civil and criminal procedure and evidence for the Shreveport Bar Association. For the 2008-09 term, Zelda Tucker, President of the  Shreveport Bar Association has appointed me as chairman of the Continuing  Legal Education Committee.
  3. Shreveport Police Academy and Caddo Parish Regional Training Academy – In about 1999 Captain Kenny Sanders, Caddo Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy, contacted me and requested that I put together a program designed for law enforcement officers as to the procedures of court and how to present effective testimony. I prepared a PowerPoint program titled “Courtroom Procedures, Testimony and Etiquette” which I presented to all deputies over the course of about ten different sessions. In early 2007, I signed on to present the lecture, which is about 75 minutes, to officers of the Shreveport Police Department on two Wednesday mornings per month throughout the year. Therefore, on two Wednesdays each month for the twelve months of 2007 I taught the course in connection with the retraining program for Shreveport Police Academy. I was also commissioned to present the program to the U.S. Attorney’s Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee.
  4. LSUS – Between 1983 and 1989, and again in 2007, I served as an adjunct instructor of Business Law at LSUS teaching 3 different courses for the College of Business. These courses focused on general legal principles and the legal environment in which business and commercial transactions are conducted. Particular areas of emphasis included contracts, agency, business entities such as proprietorship, partnerships, limited liability companies and corporate law.

Other – I have also been a frequent lecturer for the Northwest Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel (insurance and business defense lawyers) at its annual January meeting; the Northwest Louisiana Trial Lawyers and the Louisiana District Attorneys Association.
