Having known Don Miller for almost 30 years, I can say that his death on August 18, 2009 is truly a loss for the Shreveport Bar and our community.  

Don was diverse and multi-faceted.  On the one hand, he was a maverick, his own man; on the other hand, he held membership in and led numerous groups – legal, military, charitable, social and athletic. While Don was robust and large in stature (and wore an accommodating cowboy hat, bolo tie and boots as part of his daily ensemble), he had a colossal heart of gold and routinely exhibited compassion and kindness to his fellow man.  

An excellent litigator and zealous advocate, Don often represented those that are economically or otherwise challenged, honoring the laudable Christian tenet that we should reach out and help those among us that are less fortunate.  During his near 50 years as a lawyer, he routinely engaged in pro bono work, not because it was fashionable but because it was right.  

Don served as an officer for several years and then president of the Shreveport Bar Association (1993) as well as a duke of the Krewe of Justinian and later King [Justinian XIII (2002)].  He was also passionately engaged in the political process through the Democratic Executive Committee and faithfully led our Christian journey through the establishment of the Shreveport Red Mass Society.  

Don was a college football player and for decades a devout weight lifter at the downtown “Y”, hence his stature and compelling presence – a big and tough guy whose boots will be hard to fill.

Don was a good friend to me and a friend to his fellow man.  Because of his generous contributions, our Shreveport community is no doubt a better place to live.  Don Miller enriched our lives, and we will miss him...
